I am a pastry chef and use a KitchenAid everyday. The mixer I have at home came with a plain metal beater and the one I use at work came with the enameled one. Unfortunately frequent use of this beater chips the enamel off and so you will have small pieces of it in your doughs. The plian metal beater works perfectly and is easy to clean. If you are only an occasional user perhaps the enamel is sufficient for your needs and won't chip off. However for me I will write to KitchenAid and purchase one without the enamel.

KitchenAid Professional 600 Series 6-Quart Stand Mixers Review

I already own a 5 Qt mixer from the "Artisan Series" but decided to upgrade to this model so that I could make larger batches of bread dough.For my recipe, a single batch is 2 cups of bread flour.I tried making a double batch (4 cups) in my new Pro 600, but after about 15 min. of kneading, the motor just turned off.I thought I had burned it out, but after consulting the instruction manual, it seems this is normal.Normal?!Yes, that's what it said--all I needed to do was wait for the motor to cool off (it's also "normal" for it to get so hot it is uncomfortable to touch) for 30 min. and then try again.I find it hard to believe that this mixer could make bread with 14 cups of AP flour, as the box says.Having said that, here are my thoughts on this mixer vs. the "Artisan Series" mixer I already own:1.The motor consumes over 50% more electricity (and is certainly more noisy) in the pro 600, but how much of that is being converted to extra torque, I'm not really sure.What I do know is that I can only do a single batch of bread at a time in either mixer.
2.As has been mentioned in other reviews, the Artisan mixer came with a "coated" paddle and dough hook, whereas the pro 600 has "Brandished steel".This means the Artisan's implements are dishwasher safe but the pro 600's are not.I had assumed those bright, shiny implements that I saw in the store display were stainless steel, but I guess not.If it weren't for this problem and the huge price tag, I would have given this mixer 5 stars.

On the plus side...

3.I love the new spiral dough hook--it is much better than the C shaped one in my Artisan
4.The soft start feature is a nice touch.Then again, it would be even nicer if there was a speed lower than the lowest one provided.
5.The larger bowl is nice
6.There is more of a difference between speeds 7-10 than the Artisan

Things I'd like to see changed in the next iteration:
--A gear box.I have a cordless drill that has a high and low gear.As could be expected, low is for more power, high is for more speed.Why don't these mixers use a simple gear selector like that?This would be a HUGE improvement--it would not only provide more power, but the lower speed I would like, as mentioned in point 4.
--Stainless steel implements as mentioned in point #2

CONCLUSION:
A very nice mixer, but so is my "Artisan".If you are going to buy a new mixer (and don't have an unlimited supply of money to throw at it), I wouldn't recommend the Pro 600--get one from the Artisan series instead--it is much cheaper and does just about as good a job.There are small advantages to the Pro 600, but even all together, I don't think they are worth the added price.

I had been looking at food dehydrators for 2 months, trying to make my decision, which was hard, as this one had no reviews and I count on the customer reviews to help me decide on whether or not something is a good buy.It is hard to spend this much money on something and not know what you all think about it.But...I really wanted a square one, with a rear fan, and a 10 tray one, but the Excaliber was so expensive, and the reviews were iffy in the sound area and in the temperature control area. (I actually bought this from E-Bay, (better price and freebies too) and they have reviews, but I don't know if I can count on their review system like I can Amazon's.)Anyway, I took the plung and bought this beauty, I think that the smaller size of the holes in the trays were what made the decision for me, along with the $100+ difference in the price, and the free silicone liner sheets.It is quiet, efficient, and I just love it.It came with 3 free silicone liner sheets for fruit leather that I would have had to pay extra for with the Excalibur and the Nesco, and it came with a face plate filler so that I can pull out 4 trays and make yoghurt in it if I want to.

I have dried bananas, strawberries and oranges so far with great results.I was surprised that the oranges were so good, never expected to like them, just did not want them to go bad, so I sliced them in whole circles and put them on the trays. They were crispy/chewy and sweet, and I will save the rinds and chop them in my blender to use later for recipes that call for orange zest. I made Essiene bread this last week, using sprouted wheat, raisins, and sunflower seeds.It was very fast and with the openings of the trays about 1/2 inch, I put the patties right on the trays, no liner, and it was fine, no chunks falling through.I love the separate temperature control, it is nice.So far, 2 months later, I have no complaints except my family is eating the dried fruit as fast as I have time to make it, and I was hoping to store some of it.My granddaughter has a sweet tooth, and she has her chubby little hands full of the bananas when she is here.I would have loved to put some of the dried strawberries in my Mueseli, but they disappeared before I could sneak some away.I am ready for summer to come (we are still having snow storms...) and for my garden to produce so that I can really put it to good use.I will try jerky soon, but I have no doubt that it will do the job well.I wanted to wait and write this review until I was sure it would work well for all of my needs, and I am confident to recommend this to anyone who is wanting a good dehydrator for a good price.It is bigger than the Nesco, smaller than the Excaliber, at 10 square feet of drying space, it more than meets my needs.It is just the right size for my counter, not too big, sits next to the microwave.It makes less noise by far than my dishwasher or my stove hood fan.I know it is on, but I can still think and hear what everyone is saying.The kitchen smells wonderful while it is running as well, like whatever I am drying.I expect to be able to take advantage of sales, Costco sized packages, and my garden offerings this year, without worrying about spoilage, plus save a little money, eat a little better.Not a bad life...grin...

Customer service was amazing.I received it within 3 days of ordering it, if you can believe that.I actually had a problem with the unit.It was explained to me that sometimes when the unit is drop shipped through UPS, they actually drop it, and the protective grill around the fan can get shifted.Well mine did, and it had the fan blade trapped.I turned on the unit and washed the trays off for my first use, but the fan blade was not turning and it melted.Oh man, I had the trays full of sliced bananas and no dehydrator!Bummer, plus my husband had already thrown the box away so how could I even send it back?I did not want to send it back, I just wanted it to work!I took it apart and could see where the problem was, this was a Saturday and their office was closed, so I E-mailed the company, Mercantile Station 2, asking them to send me a replacement fan blade.Within 30 minutes I had a personal phone call (again, this is Saturday and they are closed) and a promise to ship me a new fan blade the following Monday.He explained to me that about 1 in 80 customers had had this problem, (leave it to me to be the 1 in 80...) and that they were looking into their packaging to fix the problem.Meanwhile he could not have been nicer, or more accommodating, and he was very grateful that I was willing to fix the problem myself.Me too, I did not want to have to wait for an exchange, I just wanted to get it working, and it does, and I am one happy dehydrating woman!(So check that your fan blade is free of impingement before you turn your unit on, which is easy, just take out the trays and you can see all the inner workings.)FEEL CONFIDENT to purchase this unit and save a good $100+ over the other comparable units on the market.

KitchenAid KP26M1XBS Professional 600, 6-Quart Bowl Lift Stand Mixers Review

I got my kitchenaid 600 mixer from amazon. After it arrived, I prepared a sourdough recipe that called for 8 cups of flour, the mixer bogged down and quit. I have prepared the same recipe 4 more times, each time the mixer quits. I thought this behavior was abnormal, but after a bit of online snooping, it turns out that many people experience similar problems when working with thicker doughs.

Kitchenaid clains it can handle 14 cups of all purpose flour, it simply cannot, in fact, i would set the maximum at about 10 cups for a less dense dough, and at 7 or 8 for thicker breads.

Ultimately, this is the best mixer available to the home baker in this price range, as much sturdier commerial grade models in this size ( 6 quarts) begin at about $1500. However, don't expext to use it to make thick bread or pizza doughs in large quantities, it simply isn't up to the task. It will do most of the work, but some hand kneading is still required.

Despite it's all steel gears and automatic shutoff feature, it seems that the motor and drive mechanisms are underbuilt and prone to failure if overloaded. On the upside, if your mixer happens to malfunction within a year of purchase (mine did after 2 weeks), Kitchenaid has great customer support and will replace the unit.

In short, it is a great mixer, but doesn't live up to the manufacture's promises.

Toastmaster 1148X Fast Bake 2-Pound Horizontal Bread Machine Review

My husband and I chose this breadmaker as a 10 yr. anniversary gift from his employer. I have used it only 2 days and I have two main complaints about it.One, I don't like that this is a vertical machine, I like the top of the bread to be like the bread found in grocery stores. Two, on the basic medium cycle, the bread got way too dark and I had to turn off the machine even though it had 32 minutes left to bake the bread.My son said the bread was burning. Who knows what the bread would have looked like if I had left it in the machine until the end of the cycle!
The recipe book is easy to understand and has a lot of information; I suggest that you read it a few times all the way through before you start to make bread.I have not used any of the cycles except Basic Medium and French.My husband and I feel that we will only use the 1 lb. and 1.5 lb. setting, because when I made the French Bread on the 2 lb. setting, the bread was not dense like normal french bread--it had a lot of holes due to the need to expand the dough to make a bigger loaf.I made the second loaf of bread--the one I had to remove early--on the 1.5 lb. setting, and it was fine, nice and dense.The machine is noisy when mixing the bread, but that doesn't bother me.The inner pan is very easy to clean, though it cannot be immersed in water/dishwasher.Bread is very easy to remove from the pan.
Lastly, I found that as soon as I start the machine, it mixes, but I have to open the lid and give the machine a little help by scraping the flour from the corners and bottom with a rubber spatula.The blade does not get all the flour from the corners and the bottom.The flour will lay there even after the machine starts mixing the dough ball back and forth. This doesn't bother me either, I don't mind scraping the flour; I'd rather do that than have lumps of flour in the bread or flour on the outside of the loaf.
Since we didn't have to pay for this, this breadmaker is an ok machine. It does what it is supposed to do. My husband is a fresh bread lover, so he is pleased with the bread. However, if you are paying $100 and up for a breadmaker, look at other models first.

Cook's Choice 5 Inch Better Baker Review

There appears to be a "fill line" on the sides of the pan. I used a regular Duncan Hines chocolate cake mix and filled it to the line of each cavity. It overflowed quite a bit while baking. I had a mess to clean up on the bottom of my oven, not to mention the burnt cake smell, but at least I'll know next time not to fill it to that line. Also, there was mix left over so be prepared with an extra pan for the extra batter. I like the pan and will use it for many things. I also purchased the smaller version but haven't used it yet.

Received my USA made Pullman pan and didn't waste any type breaking it in.Used my bread machine to do the hard work: one hour; put the dough in the pan, the cover on and baked for 30 min. Beautiful evenly browned crust on all four sides, and thequickest bake and clean up ever! I am very very pleased with the performance of this pan.Did not have to wash it afterwards -just a simple wipe with a paper towel. It released the loaf of bread that easily. The 9 x 4 x 4 size is excellent for two. USA Pans recycles and the price is excellent!

This excellent bread pan produces outstanding loaves that do not stick to it. I used it the day it arrived with great success.
I used a "Pain de Mie" recipe from King Arthur's Flour that I found on the Internet which, with the addition of a 1/3 cup more water, produces a perfectly square fine crumb loaf which is excellent as a sandwich bread or toast.
The ribbed design of this pan evenly distributes heat during cooking and releases the loaf intact. It is very easy to clean.
The pan is a little expensive but substantial, well made and of very good quality.I highly recommend it.

Tumbleweed Pottery Monkey Bread Mold Review

The "monkey Bread" mold performs just fine.The recipes on the side of the box were a bit generous in the bread ingrediedient causing the contents to overflow when the dough rises so use a little caution.Don't fill more than 1/2 to 2/3 with the unrisen dough.The breads are delicious.Follow directions for greasing the inside of the mold.I have had no problems with breads sticking to the mold and they remove easily.Because the mold is ceramic you have to place it in a cold oven, then turn on the oven to prevent thermal shock and possible cracking.Don't start your cooking timer until the temperature reaches the recommended setting or the bread will be undercooked.The mold is hollow and there is an air hole in the bottom, so if you wash it in a dishwasher you will end up with some water inside the shell that is a bit difficult to drain.

I have these "bowl" pans in both sizes. I use the smaller size more often since personal sized items make portion control easier.

Whenever I bake, I put the pan on a sheet pan. That makes it easier to get hot pans out of the oven and if you have spill over, clean up is contained. I don't use boxed mixes - ever. I found this pan roughly holds recipes sized for a standard loaf pan.

This pan makes it easy to trim your item to get that professional flat bottom even if you don't have a high degree of experience.My teenage son loves using this size to make brownies for his friends.Served slightly warm with a scoop of ice cream really wows the ladies!I like brownies or "short" cakes baked in this.We fill the indent with whipped cream and top with berries. what a relief. our bread machine bit the dust last month and i thought i was going to have to replace it. i saw this replacement belt and decided to give it a try. i took the bottom pannel off of the bottom of the bread machine and low and behold the belt was worn out. it took about 10 days to get the replacement and about 15 minutes total to repair. i was making bread that night.

Regal Bread Maker Review

My mom bought this little machine a few years ago and was immediately impressed with it.Never having a bread machine before, it was quite a treat to have a tasty, fresh baked loaf of bread without all the mixing, kneeding, and allowing the dough to rise.She was delighted to just put the ingredients into the machine, start it and in 3 hours, have up to a 2 pound loaf of steaming hot bread, ready to eat.We have never had any problems with this machine and have loaned out to a neighbor who used it and loved it so much that she bought a machine too!

Miallegro 2030 Multipan Sandwich Maker Review

A great product. I use it every day for my grilled ham & cheese sandwich at lunchtime. I've been searching for a replacement for my old grill. One of the few with flat griddle plates (most have ridges) that I prefer. This one heats up faster and grills more quickly than my old one. A great grill at a good price.

Bread Machine Pan Review

This is an excellent bread machine, I have been very happy with machine....however I had to order a replacement pan due to metal exposure and scraping that happened in blade areas.If you purchase this machine DO NOT wash or fill pan with hot water immediately after removing bread....it causes protective pan liner to flake off.I now wait until pan cools before I soak it in hot water to clean.

First off...be sure your knife block can handle the 10" blade.I had to remove my sharpener (honing steel) in order to fit it in the block.No big deal, but it may be to some.Measure it out, first.

Other than that, the knife is GREAT!I like the feel of the walnut handle, which is nice in an age of plastic handles.

The teeth are spaced a LITTLE wider than my last bread knife, but I don't think it cuts differently.Either way, this knife cuts through even the toughest 3 day-old ciabatta crust with ease.

Don't overspend on your bread knife; if taken care of this will last your lifetime.

This breadmachine with crust set on medium, burned the bottom half of the crust, every time. The little window on top for selections - is hard to read or see what shows up, other than time numbers. I had to get help from another person to make sure entries were correct.I didn't like the size,shape of the bread baking pan. In all it just was not what I thought from reading the product descriptsion, and reading comparison product information. I am 67 and an experienced bread maker, and was wanting a good machine to replace being able to do the job for myself.

Breadman TR2500C Ultimate Plus Breadmachine Review

So, this is my second Breadman. I returned the first after 3 weeks becasue the pan would pop up while kneading, espeically those tougher doughs like whole wheat. I would have to babysit it and relock it in when it came out.Came down once in the am to find my bread half mixed, but cooked through....what a mess!
I returned that one thinking it was a fluke (b/c when it did make bread, it was wonderful).
The second one had the same problem. Called Customer Service...very nice lady called me back, reading from a manual that I should try to bend the little metal clips a bit to get a better lock. Tried it, didn't work. Furthermoe, once a used raisons in the 'extras' dispenser, and not the thing sticks and con't relase other things into the bread (had to scrape out rosemary from there...ug).
Looking for a new brand and new machine.

I picked this up at a little strange store here in town - brand new - for $10.It is a bit of a joke.Please realize that it does not mix bread for you, but to be fair - it doesn't say that it does.It also only heats to 300 degrees.That is not nearly hot enough to brown bread.This is a bread machine that can be purchased in 4-packs as a promotional item. Deluxe Breadmaker Review

HH gave this to me for Christmas because he knew I've been wanting one for so long and I've baked 3 loaves so far (lots of ingredients to buy)! It takes about 3 hours to cook a fully developed loaf and almost 1 1/2 hours for rapid. Homemade bread is so delicious! You basically add the ingredients in order (yeast always last), press the settings, the breadman kneads and bakes, press stop, eject, and enjoy!

I barely have to clean the pan because it is nonstick! Love it love it love it!

I would suggest if you want to begin baking right away to look for bread machine recipes online so that you can have your ingredients ready once you purchase.

**Update**
I've had this since Christmas and it has been working fine. I'm still satisfied with it. Do note that my bread comes out better and more developed with Rapid Rise Yeast.

After using a friend's Oster/Sunbeam breadmaker for a couple of months, I got hooked on the idea of making my own bread. Since I didn't need a full-size 2lb. model, I decided to try this 1.5lb unit. What appealed to me at first was the compact footprint and the oversized viewing window.
The burn-off issue described here and elsewhere on the web is pretty accurate. My package included a correction sheet for the manual that clarifies that the pan should be in the machine when you run it dry the first time. This may explain why some people reported that the dome window was melting. Anyhow, I ran the machine outside with a bit of water in the pan and that worked out fine.
After that, it was time to try my first white bread. The machine is pretty noisy compared to the Sunbeam model I'd first used. Unless your bedroom is far enough from the kitchen, you will hear this sucker if you decide to use the delay timer for morning fresh bread.
The first loaf I made was a failure since Fleischmann's active dry yeast (unlike others) is not suitable for bread machines. The granules are different sizes and do not dissolve fast enough. So I bought instant yeast which has very small granules which should have done the trick...but it looks like it was old! I had to use double the amount to get the bread to rise to a decent height. Anyhow, now I buy yeast in large vacuum packs. It is very reliable, last forever and is labeled "instant" or "quick" yeast.
So far, I've made over a dozen breads, mostly whole grain or variations of "healthy" breads. For a small family or couples, this unit is a great value. I've used stone-milled and unbleached wheat with success, although I never add the egg that almost every recipe in the book uses. Pizza dough recipe was good, but I cut down the sugar and yeast to get a thinner crust. If you like it doughy, follow the recipe as stated.
The only caveat is the crust colour control...never set it higher than LIGHT. On my machine at least, the MEDIUM setting caused the sides to almost burn...and I've never tried the DARK setting because of this.

Chef Pro Tortilla Maker/Flat Bread Makers Review

I am very pleased with the ergonomic design of this model. The 1200 watt heating element does not take very long to heat up the plates. This one also comes with a nice adjustable thermostat to set the desired temperature level. Also the nonstick plates are much better than other models that only use aluminum. The 10" diameter size is also another welcomed plus on this model which allows for different sizes of tortillas from the normal taco to the big burrito size.

I've seen reviews of similar appliances like this one and I suspect that consumers have higher expectations in the sense that they expect to press and cook at the same time. Having used this type of technology in the past, I do not expect it to fully cook the flour dough but rather pre-cook the dough. Once pre-cooked I can then bake the tortilla on a grill or comal. I do not expect something at this price to fully cook the tortilla. Tortilla presses that fully cook the tortilla do not come in the price range of this model and are not meant for home use.

This is a real time saver because it eliminates the manual process of extending the tortilla dough with a rolling pin. Making flour tortillas using this electric press is a breeze. The purpose for pre-cooking the tortilla, it is to prevent the flour tortilla dough from shrinking once you peel it off from the press' plate. This is due to the dough's elastic properties. Otherwise the dough has to be extended by hand using a rolling pin.

I am really happy with my purchase and knocked one star off only because the light indicators are a bit confusing. It has two lights, one is labeled "Ready" and the other "Power". This is my current itnerpretation of the lights: when the "Ready" light is on it means is connected to the electric power; when the "Power" light is on, it means the heating element is on. I think the "Ready" light should indicate whether it reached the desired temperature or not, and the "Power" light that is connected to the electric power. There was no mention of this in the instruction booklet nor the use of the thermostat knob. In spite of these minor omissions I consider the instruction booklet very well written.

I must clarify that I never tested the appliance to fully cook the tortilla since that was not my purpose for buying the tortilla press. I only wanted a flour tortilla press that could save me time making tortillas. I really recomend this press only if you need to press the tortilla and bake the tortilla on a real grill or comal. I think this approach is more efficient and economic than using 1200 watts of electric power to cook tortillas.

My husband bought this bread machine for me several years ago for Christmas and I absolutely LOVE it!!! In fact I've used it so much that I finally wore out the motor and now I'm in the process of buying another one just like it.Mind you on an average I use my machine 3-5 times a week.A lot of times I'll make a loaf of bread when I get home from work.Throw in the ingredients, push the button and it's that easy.Within a couple of hours, fresh hot bread. On the weekends when I have a little more time, I make a lot of things from the dough cycle.We did our research and found this machine to be the best buy. I highly recommend this machine. Very easy to use, very user friendly. I've made everything from white bread, wheat bread, raisin bread and I even tried some of the off the wall breads. I use the dough cycle a lot and from that I've made pizza dough, English muffins (which my kids JUST love), pretzels, dinner rolls, cinnamon rolls the list goes on. Honestly, the stuff I've made taste just like store bought if not better. Ask my kids. You know how picky kids can be and if they keep asking you to make more, then you know it's got to be good. If you're buying your first bread machine and are confused on what kind of cookbooks to buy because there are so many to choose from, Donna Rathmell German has the best.
